Raja Bhoj Airport, officially known as Bhopal Airport, is named after the 11th-century Paramara king Raja Bhoj, who is traditionally credited with the city’s founding. The facility was formally renamed in 2011 to coincide with the inauguration of its modern integrated terminal. While aviation activity at the site dates back to the mid-20th century, the modern facility reached its current form in 2011, replacing the previous limited terminal infrastructure to accommodate international-standard operations. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-24 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 1.33 million passengers, ranking it as the 45th busiest airport in the country. Notable milestones include the 2011 terminal expansion, which increased the total floor area to 26,936 square meters, and the 2013 installation of a solar power plant that marked its transition toward sustainable operations. As the primary air gateway to the capital of Madhya Pradesh, the airport supports Bhopal’s role as a major administrative, educational, and industrial center. It provides essential connectivity for the city’s business district and serves as the starting point for tourists visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Sanchi Stupa and the Bhimbetka rock shelters, thereby bridging the gap between the region’s ancient heritage and its modern economic development.
