Pantnagar Airport (PGH) is named in honor of Govind Ballabh Pant, the Indian independence activist and first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The airport commenced modern commercial operations in 2008 to serve the Udham Singh Nagar district, and it did not replace any existing facility. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport recorded 110,824 passengers, marking a 55.8 percent increase from the previous year. Despite this growth, it remains a regional domestic facility and does not currently hold a top-tier national or global traffic ranking. Key milestones in its development include the 2008 runway extension to 1,372 meters and the initiation of a major expansion project in 2023. This ongoing project involves realigning a national highway to accommodate a new 3,000-meter runway and a terminal designed to handle one million passengers annually by 2028. Pantnagar serves as a vital industrial and educational hub, housing the State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited and the Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. The airport supports these sectors by facilitating business and academic travel, while simultaneously acting as the primary air gateway for tourists heading to the Kumaon Himalayas, including destinations like Nainital and Jim Corbett National Park.
