Dibrugarh Airport, also widely known as Mohanbari Airport, serves as the primary aviation gateway to Upper Assam. It is named after the city of Dibrugarh and the specific locality of Mohanbari where it is situated. In June 2025, the Assam Legislative Assembly passed a resolution to rename the facility Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Airport in honor of the Bharat Ratna awardee, though it remains officially listed by its original name as of early 2026. Established in the early 1950s, the airport did not replace an existing facility but rather formalized regional air access. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2024-25 fiscal year, the airport handled 822,437 passengers, ranking it as the fourth-busiest in Northeast India and approximately 42nd nationwide. Significant infrastructure milestones include the inauguration of an integrated terminal in February 2009 and the March 2026 commissioning of a runway extension to 2,291 metres. This upgrade, paired with the installation of CAT-I approach lighting, allows for larger aircraft and improved reliability during monsoon and winter fog. As the Tea City of India, Dibrugarh functions as a critical hub for the global tea trade and the domestic oil and natural gas sectors. The airport supports this role by providing essential connectivity for the industrial corridor and serving as a vital tourist gateway to eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
