Jorhat Airport, officially known as Rowriah Airport, is a dual-use domestic facility and Indian Air Force station located in the Rowriah area of Assam. Originally established in 1939 by the Royal Air Force on land from the Rowriah Tea Estate to support Allied operations during World War II, it was repurposed in August 1952 as the first eastern airbase for the Indian Air Force. Commercial civil operations commenced in the early 1950s. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the airport handled 130,754 passengers, ranking it as the fourth busiest airport in Assam despite remaining outside the top fifty busiest facilities nationally. Key infrastructure milestones include the 2020 installation of a 75 KWP rooftop solar power plant, making it the first airport in Northeast India to adopt such technology, and the 2011-2012 runway and taxiway upgrades that introduced night landing capabilities. In 2022, the state government approved 156 crore rupees for land acquisition to facilitate further terminal and apron expansions. As a vital gateway to the Tea Capital of the World, the airport supports Jorhat’s role as a global tea research centre and a primary transit point for travellers visiting the UNESCO-listed Kaziranga National Park and Majuli, the largest river island on Earth.
