Hollongi Airport, Itanagar

Donyi Polo Airport, also known as Itanagar Airport (HGI), serves as the primary aviation gateway to the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. Historically referred to as Hollongi Airport during its development, the facility was renamed in 2022 to honor the state's indigenous Donyi Polo religion, which reveres the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo). The greenfield airport was inaugurated on November 19, 2022, marking a significant milestone as the first commercial airport to serve the capital directly, effectively replacing the long-standing dependence on Lilabari Airport in neighboring Assam. While it is a critical infrastructure asset for Northeast India, handling 170,296 passengers in the 2024-25 fiscal year, it remains outside the top fifty busiest airports in the country and does not hold a global traffic ranking. Key milestones for the facility include receiving the Best Airport under RCS-UDAN award and achieving a provisional GRIHA 4-star rating for its sustainable, energy-efficient terminal design. The airport features a 2,300-meter runway capable of supporting narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320. As the administrative and cultural heart of the state, Itanagar functions as a vital hub for governance and a gateway to the Eastern Himalayas. The airport supports this role by facilitating access to remote tourist destinations such as Ziro Valley and Namdapha National Park, while also acting as a catalyst for regional trade and economic integration.
