Jaisalmer Airport, identified by the IATA code JSA, is a civil enclave located within the Jaisalmer Air Force Station in Rajasthan. Unlike many Indian airports named after historical or political figures, it retains the name of its host city, the Golden City of Jaisalmer, and has not undergone any official renaming since its inception. The current civil terminal was completed in 2013 to establish dedicated commercial infrastructure; however, scheduled flight operations officially commenced on September 5, 2017, under the regional connectivity scheme. It did not replace an existing facility but rather modernized the city’s access to the national aviation network. In terms of passenger traffic, Jaisalmer ranks as a significant regional facility within Rajasthan; for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it handled approximately 138,500 passengers according to Airports Authority of India data. While it does not feature in global traffic rankings, it serves as a vital link for the western desert circuit. Key milestones include the 2013 inauguration of the 2,500-square-meter terminal building, which was constructed at a cost of approximately 80 crore rupees and designed with traditional yellow sandstone to reflect local heritage. Jaisalmer serves primarily as a global heritage and tourism hub, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage fort and desert safaris. The airport supports this role by providing direct seasonal connectivity to major Indian metros, significantly bolstering the local hospitality economy by reducing travel times for domestic and international travelers.
