Kangra Airport, Dharmsala

Kangra Airport, officially known as Kangra-Gaggal Airport, serves the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Its foundation was laid in 1986, and it was rechristened from Gaggal Airport to its current name in 2001 to better reflect its regional identity. Commercial operations commenced in 1990 with Vayudoot as the inaugural carrier. As the busiest airport in Himachal Pradesh, it handled approximately 210,000 passengers during the 2024-25 fiscal year, marking a significant increase in regional air traffic. Key infrastructure milestones include a 2007 runway extension to 1,370 metres and the simultaneous inauguration of a new terminal building. More recently, the airport achieved the top rank in the Airports Authority of India’s 2024 Customer Satisfaction Survey for domestic airports. A major expansion project is currently underway to extend the runway to 3,010 metres, which will eliminate existing load penalties and allow for narrow-body jet operations. The airport serves as a critical gateway to Dharamshala, the state's winter capital and a global hub for spiritual tourism as the residence of the 14th Dalai Lama. It further supports the region's role as a heritage and sports destination, providing essential access to the historic Kangra Fort and the high-altitude Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.
