Monkey Tribe Vagamon

We stayed at Monkey Tribe, Vagamon in July 2026, and sadly, our experience was very disappointing overall. We booked the 6-bed dormitory, which felt cramped, dark, and had poor ventilation. The washroom was small and inconvenient. The room was dirty, with stained bedsheets and ants and other insects near the beds. The washroom did not have basic toiletries like body soap or shampoo, and the handwash provided was low quality. The common area was the biggest letdown—poorly maintained, dirty, and seemingly uncleaned for a long time. There were few games or activities, dogs wandered the space, and no bonfire, music nights, or community host to create a lively vibe. The place felt dull and neglected. Worse, we found insects in the drinking water at the cafeteria, which made us question hygiene. Food was okay, but the overall cleanliness made it hard to trust the hygiene standards. We had planned to stay three nights but left after two due to the poor conditions. This property used to be part of the Zostel network and was better maintained then. Since becoming independent as Monkey Tribe, the quality has dropped a lot. Overall, I cannot recommend this place. It has potential because of its location, but the lack of cleanliness, poor upkeep, and missing basic hospitality made our stay very disappointing.

I stayed here when it was managed by Zostel, and it was decent and good. However, since Monkey Tribe took over, the service has become inefficient. I had a terrible interaction with the staff; they were rude, disrespectful, and unwilling to address my concerns. The reservation process was also problematic. I will not be visiting any Monkey Tribe properties again. I am very unhappy with how things were handled.

This stay was not very good. It used to be Zostel before, and the reviews back then were excellent. Now, it's just an average place. Maintenance is lacking, and most of the staff, including reception, are from North India, with fewer Malayalis. I was surprised there is no way to turn off the lights in the dorm room at night except by using a common switch outside, which also turns off the bathroom lights and charging plugs. The beds are very large but have no privacy curtains. The location is somewhat far from town, situated about 1 km inside the main road on a steep incline. Walking to town, which is 3-4 km away, is not recommended. Having a bike makes it manageable. The infinity pool is misleading; it's actually a natural rock pool, not a proper swimming pool as some have suggested. The natural pool is hard to access, especially during the rainy season. The hammock is a nice feature, and the ambiance at night during rain is lovely. The place also gets foggy.

The food is decent, and the accommodation offers good value for money.
