Here are the details:

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, rail passengers will now be able to choose the food they want to consume while travelling from the new ‘customised menu’. The new menu will be suitable for diabetics, infants and fitness enthusiasts, and will include millet-based local products.

The new ‘customised menu’ will also have items of regional cuisines/preferences, seasonal delicacies and special food during festivals.

“Passengers from southern and western states such as Maharashtra would often complain about the lack of regional food compared to the standardised ones. This will help in not only improving the food quality but also customise the menu according to the destination. For instance, a train to Gujarat will have local delicacies like fafda, dhokla, and vada pav for Maharashtra. This is the first time the board has given the IRCTC such an authority,” said a Railway official.

Important:
According to the directive sent by the Railway Board to IRCTC, for prepaid trains in which catering charges are included in the passenger fare, the menu shall be decided by IRCTC within the tariff that’s already been notified. In addition, sale of a-la-carte meals and branded food items on MRP will be permitted in these prepaid trains. The menu and tariff of such a-la-carte meals will be decided by IRCTC.

The directive also mentioned that the menu and tariff of Janta Meals shall remain unchanged. As with prepaid trains, IRCTC will decide the menu of standard meals for other Mail/Express services.
