Plug Type and Travel Adapter Guide for Madagascar

Plug types used in Madagascar

Madagascar uses 5 plug types: Type C, D, E, J and K. Of these, Type E, J and K are not used in India, so you'll need a travel adapter for those sockets.

Type C plug and socket

Type C

Type C: Uses two parallel, round pins.

Type D plug and socket

Type D

Type D: Employs three round pins.

Type E plug and socket

Type E

Type E: Two round pins with a grounding hole.

Type J plug and socket

Type J

Type J: Three round pins in a triangle.

Type K plug and socket

Type K

Type K: Two round pins, one semi-round pin.

Do I Need a Voltage Converter in Madagascar?

Madagascar runs on a main voltage of 127 volts at a frequency of 50 Hz, significantly lower than India's 230V/50Hz. This matters: any single-voltage Indian appliance (typical hair dryers, straighteners, immersion rods, electric kettles) will not run properly at 127V and may not heat up at all. To use them safely, you would need a step-up voltage converter. Dual-voltage devices like almost all phone chargers, laptop adapters and modern cameras are unaffected and only need a plug adapter.

Will my Indian charger work in Madagascar?

Yes, but it depends on which socket your hotel has. Madagascar uses Type C, D, E, J and K sockets at 127V/50Hz. Your Indian phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage (the label reads 100–240V), so they handle Madagascar voltage without any issue. The only question is plug shape — your Indian plug fits Type C and D sockets directly, but will not fit Type E, J and K sockets without an adapter. Your charger is dual-voltage and handles 127V safely, but single-voltage devices like hair dryers will not work.
