Everyone knows Japan's cherry blossoms, but ask the Japanese and many will tell you autumn is the better season. From late October, a wave of colour called the koyo front rolls down the country, setting maples ablaze in red and ginkgo trees in gold. Unlike sakura, which vanishes in a week, autumn colour lasts six weeks and moves predictably — Nikko's mountain shrines peak in late October and early November, Tokyo glows through mid and late November, and Kyoto saves its grand finale for 25 November to 7 December in 2026. The timing suits Indian travellers beautifully, since the season starts right after Diwali and ends before Christmas-fare madness. Days are crisp at 8–16°C, skies are at their clearest all year, and a direct flight from Delhi reaches Tokyo in about eight hours. If you want Japan at its most photogenic with hotel prices below spring-peak levels, koyo 2026 is your window.

The season is built for slow, beautiful days. In Kyoto, more than 2,000 maples turn Tofukuji temple into a sea of red that you view from a wooden bridge suspended above the valley, while Eikando and Kodaiji light up their gardens after dark for night viewing. Nikko, two hours from Tokyo, pairs World Heritage shrines with the Irohazaka road and its 48 hairpin bends climbing through tunnels of colour. Tokyo itself does autumn in gold, with avenues of ginkgo at Meiji Jingu Gaien and gardens like Rikugien holding evening illuminations. In between, you can soak in an onsen with red leaves drifting past the window, eat roasted sweet potatoes from street carts, and ride trains that arrive to the minute. Crowds exist at famous temples, but nothing like cherry blossom season. A comfortable 7-day trip from Delhi costs about ₹1.8 lakh per person, noticeably easier on the pocket than spring.
