Every spring, Japan turns soft pink for barely two weeks, and the whole country steps outside to watch. This is sakura season, when cherry trees bloom in a wave that travels from the warm south up to snowy Hokkaido. Offices pause for hanami picnics, parks fill with families on blue picnic sheets, and the evening news tracks the "cherry blossom front" the way Indian channels track the monsoon. For spring 2027, forecasters expect Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka to start blooming in the last week of March, with full bloom in the first week of April. The timing works well for Indian travellers: school exams are winding down, the weather is a pleasant 10–18°C, and a direct flight from Delhi reaches Tokyo in about eight hours. Hanami itself costs nothing, which makes it one of the most affordable world-famous spectacles to plan a trip around. If Japan has been on your someday list, sakura 2027 is the reason to book.

The experience is bigger than the photographs suggest. In Tokyo, rowboats drift under blossom tunnels at Chidorigafuchi moat while Ueno Park hosts thousands of picnics a day. In Kyoto, the Philosopher's Path runs for two kilometres beside a canal lined end to end with cherry trees, and the old geisha district of Gion looks like a film set. Osaka adds its own flavour with riverside blossoms at Kema Sakuranomiya and the street food of Dotonbori a short train ride away. Evenings bring yozakura, when parks and castles light up the blossoms after dark and entry is usually free or under ₹500. The food is a happy surprise even for vegetarians, since sakura-flavoured sweets, mochi and lattes appear everywhere from convenience stores to century-old tea houses. Cost is the only catch because this is Japan's peak season; book flights and hotels by December 2026 and a comfortable week costs about ₹1.8–2 lakh per person.
