Air India

Air India, the national flag carrier of India started operations in 1932 and remains synonymous with air travel in India. It is one of the longest serving and the largest air carriers in the country. The airline's domestic hubs are located at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. The airline is also the first Indian airline to join the elite Star Alliance network as a full member in July 2014.

Fleet

As of January 2015, the Air India fleet boasts of 108 aircrafts besides an order for 10+ more aircrafts. The latest induction into the fleet line is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, followed by Boeing 777 and Boeing 747.

The Air India brand

The logo of Air India is a red-coloured flying swan morphed from Air India’s characteristic logo, ‘The Centaur’, with an orange-coloured ‘Konark Chakra’ placed inside it. The official mascot of Air India is a mustachioed rotund man known as the Maharajah, a familiar lovable figure that first made its appearance way back in 1946.

First class and executive class travellers get to revel in the luxury of lounge facilities provided by the airline across a number of Indian as well as international airports. Baggage Policy

Any baggage exceeding in size, i.e., the sum of the 3 dimensions (length+breadth+height) more than 45 inches or 115 centimetres, cannot be treated as hand baggage and will have to be checked in as per Air India baggage policy. For domestic travel, first class passengers have a 40 kg allowance while the executive class passengers have a 35 kg allowance. Economy class have lower allowances further dependent upon their cabin class. The maximum weight permissible for a single piece of baggage is 32 kg. Passengers across all classes are permitted to carry one piece of free hand baggage. This baggage should not weigh more than 8 kg or exceed 45 inches in linear dimensions. On the international network, baggage allowances depend on the class of travel and the country that the passenger is travelling to. However, the general trend shows an allowance of around 35 to 40 kg for Executive class and 25 to 30 kg for the Economy class.

Air India Express

Travellers seeking some lower fares can consider the Air India Express, a subsidiary of the Air India. With a fleet line consisting of state of the art B737-800 aircrafts, it aims at providing budget travel with aircrafts having a single class economy. The airline operates scheduled passenger services mainly to South East Asia and the Persian Gulf.

Merger Information

Pursuant to a government announcement Air India was merged with Indian Airlines in 2007. The merger resulted in the formation of the company, National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL).
