Do keep your phone and wallet in inside pockets. Crowded markets attract pickpockets in every country.

Don't plan market visits for 25–26 December — most German markets close on 24 December afternoon.

Don't drink Glühwein on an empty stomach in the cold. It is stronger than it tastes.

Don't pack only fashionable shoes. Cobblestones get icy, so carry shoes with proper grip.

Don't try all five cities in under 6 days. Two nights in at least two cities keeps the trip a holiday, not a relay race.

Don't forget that shops in Austria and Germany close on Sundays — markets stay open, supermarkets do not.
