Aurora — Travel Guide

The sky catches fire in green and purple — and 2026 is a peak year to watch.

Some sights change how you think about the planet, and the aurora borealis is one of them. On clear winter nights above the Arctic Circle, charged particles from the sun hit the upper atmosphere and the sky ripples in green, purple and pink. Tromsø in northern Norway sits directly under the auroral oval, which makes it one of the most dependable places on earth to see the show. The 2026–27 season runs from mid-September 2026 to early April 2027, and it comes with a bonus. The sun is just past the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, and scientists note that the years around and after a solar maximum often produce the strongest and most frequent auroras. For Indian travellers this is the season to stop postponing the bucket-list trip. A Schengen visa, a flight to Oslo and a short hop north put you under the most famous light show in the sky.

Usual trip duration

2-3 days

A 2-3 day trip to Oslo allows you to explore the city's main attractions such as the Viking Ship Museum, the Oslo Opera House, and the Royal Palace. You can also take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the local cuisine.

Expensive

Oslo is known for being an expensive city to visit, with high prices for accommodations, dining, and transportation. Travelers should be prepared for a higher budget when planning a trip to Oslo, as even budget-friendly options can be relatively costly compared to other destinations.

Prices can vary based on the season and preferences.

Interesting facts

Solar Cycle 25 peaked around 2024–25 and solar activity remains elevated, which is why scientists and tour operators expect 2026 to be among the strongest aurora years in over a decade.

Auroras occur roughly 90–150 km above the earth; oxygen glows green at lower altitudes and red higher up, while nitrogen adds blue and purple edges.

Tromsø sits at 69°N inside the auroral oval, yet the Gulf Stream keeps it milder than most places at that latitude, including parts of much-lower Canada.

From late November to mid-January, Tromsø experiences polar night, when the sun never rises above the horizon — which means aurora hunting can start as early as 3 pm.

The same solar storms that paint the Arctic sky have pushed auroras as far south as Ladakh; red auroras were photographed from Hanle in Ladakh during recent strong storms.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do layer like an onion: thermal innerwear, fleece, down jacket, insulated boots, woollen socks, gloves and a beanie for nights of -5°C to -15°C.

Do stay at least 3–4 nights; the aurora needs clear skies and solar activity to line up, and one-night trips often end in cloud.

Do set your camera or phone to manual: ISO 1600–3200, aperture wide open, shutter 2–8 seconds, and carry a small tripod.

Do download an aurora forecast app (KP index alerts) and check cloud maps; chasing clear sky matters more than chasing the KP number.

Do book aurora chases with small-group operators who drive towards clear skies, sometimes as far as the Finnish border.

Do buy travel insurance with €30,000 medical cover before applying; it is mandatory for the Schengen visa anyway.

Don't plan the trip around full-moon week if you want the darkest skies, though strong auroras still show through moonlight.

Don't use flash or phone torches around other watchers; night vision takes 15–20 minutes to build and one flash ruins it.

Don't keep your phone exposed in the cold; batteries drain fast below zero, so keep devices in an inner pocket.

Don't expect the colours your camera captures; to the naked eye weaker displays look pale grey-green, while strong ones show true colour.

Don't rely only on free hotel-window viewing in Tromsø town; city lights wash out the sky, so head out of town for the real show.

Don't drive icy roads yourself without winter-driving experience; guided chases or the Tromsø cable car are safer choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Norway?

The season runs from mid-September 2026 to early April 2027, and the sweet spots are late September–October and February–March. Those months combine statistically active equinox skies with more stable weather. December–January is darkest but cloudier and coldest.

Is 2026 a good year to see the northern lights?

Yes, one of the best in over a decade. Solar Cycle 25 peaked around 2024–25 and NASA and NOAA observations show the sun is still in a phase of heightened activity, which historically delivers frequent and intense auroras in the years right after the maximum. Displays should remain strong through the 2026–27 season.

How much does a northern lights trip to Norway cost from India?

Plan about ₹2.9 lakh per person for a comfortable 6-day mid-range trip ex-Delhi, including flights, hotels, two guided chases and the visa. Backpacker-style trips can be managed near ₹1.6–1.7 lakh, while luxury trips with private chases and design hotels cross ₹5 lakh.

Do Indians need a visa for Norway?

Yes, a Schengen short-stay visa applied through VFS Global, costing about ₹11,200 with service fees. You need flights, hotels, €30,000 travel insurance, bank statements and ITRs, plus biometrics on your first application. Apply 4–6 weeks before travel; processing normally takes up to 15 days.

Are the northern lights guaranteed in Tromsø?

No natural event is guaranteed, but Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, so over 3–4 clear-ish nights your odds are strong, especially with guided chases that drive to clear skies. Operators in Tromsø routinely cross into inland valleys or towards Finland to escape coastal cloud. The longer you stay, the closer the odds get to certainty.

How do I reach Tromsø from India?

Fly Delhi or Mumbai to Oslo (one stop via Doha, Dubai, Frankfurt or Helsinki on most fares) and take a 2-hour domestic flight to Tromsø on SAS, Norwegian or Widerøe. Total journey time is typically 15–20 hours. Return fares from India usually land between ₹60,000 and ₹90,000 booked early.

How cold is Tromsø in winter and what should I pack?

Usually between 0°C and -10°C in town, colder inland on chases, which is milder than its Arctic latitude thanks to the Gulf Stream. Pack thermals, fleece, a proper down jacket, waterproof insulated boots, gloves and a beanie. Many chase operators lend thermal suits and boots for the night.

Can I see the northern lights without a tour?

Yes, if skies are clear you can watch from dark spots near Tromsø like Telegrafbukta beach or ride the Fjellheisen cable car above the city lights. Tours earn their fee on cloudy nights by driving 2–4 hours to clear skies, which is hard to do on your own. A mix of one tour night and one self-watch night works well.

Tromsø or Lofoten — which is better for the aurora?

Tromsø has higher logistical convenience: more flights, more tours and slightly better statistical position under the oval. Lofoten offers far more dramatic foregrounds of peaks, beaches and red cabins, which photographers love. With 6–7 days, do both; with 3–4 days, stay with Tromsø.

What camera settings capture the northern lights on a phone?

Use night mode or manual/pro mode: ISO 1600–3200, shutter 2–8 seconds, focus set to infinity, and brace the phone on a tripod or a stable surface. Recent flagship phones capture surprisingly good aurora shots. Carry a power bank in a warm pocket, since cold kills batteries quickly.

Is Norway very expensive for Indian travellers?

It is among Europe's pricier countries, with a simple restaurant meal at ₹1,500–2,500 and hotels from about ₹8,000 a night in season. You can control costs with guesthouses, supermarket breakfasts and lunches, and city buses. The big-ticket items worth paying for are the guided chases and one great husky or whale experience.

Can the northern lights be seen from India?

Almost never, though during exceptionally strong solar storms red auroras have been photographed from Hanle in Ladakh by astronomy observatories. For the full overhead display of moving green curtains, you must travel to the auroral zone — northern Norway, Iceland, Finland or Canada. Tromsø remains one of the most reliable choices.
