A major milestone occurred in December 2018 with the inauguration of a new domestic terminal, constructed in a record eleven months to accommodate the influx for the 2019 Kumbh Mela. This terminal increased the airport's peak hour capacity to 300 passengers and integrated sustainable features, including a 1-megawatt solar power plant that contributes to its energy requirements. Prayagraj serves as a critical religious and heritage destination, hosting the world’s largest human gathering at the Triveni Sangam, while also functioning as a major judicial and educational center. The airport facilitates this role by providing essential connectivity for pilgrims, legal professionals attending the High Court, and students, bridging the gap between this historic inland city and India’s major metropolitan hubs.
