Bhavnagar Airport, also known as Bhavnagar Civil Aerodrome, serves the city of Bhavnagar in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. The facility was originally established by the Bhavnagar State during the princely era for the private use of the ruling family and is named after the city, which itself was named for its founder, Bhavsinhji Gohil. Following the integration of the princely states into the Union of India in 1948, the airfield was transferred to the central government and transitioned into a public civil aviation hub. As a regional domestic facility, it does not hold a global ranking; however, in the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled 74,503 passengers, representing a 1.4 percent increase over the previous year. Significant milestones include its conversion to renewable energy, with the airport becoming one of seven solar-powered facilities in Gujarat in 2023. Furthermore, the Airports Authority of India initiated an expansion project in 2023, seeking land to extend the runway to 2,500 meters and construct a new terminal to accommodate larger narrow-body aircraft. The airport is a vital infrastructure asset for Bhavnagar, which functions as a major port city and industrial center. It serves as the primary air gateway for pilgrims traveling to the sacred Jain temple complex at Palitana and for business travelers visiting the Alang Ship Breaking Yard, the largest ship recycling yard in the world.
