Officially designated as Morarji Desai Surat International Airport following a Union Cabinet approval in December 2023, the facility is named after the former Prime Minister of India. While a basic airstrip existed at the site since the early 1990s, the airport commenced modern commercial operations in May 2007 following the completion of a new terminal building. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it ranks as the 35th busiest airport in the country, handling approximately 1.3 million passengers annually. A significant milestone in its recent development was the December 2023 inauguration of a new integrated terminal building, which expanded the airport’s annual handling capacity to 3.5 million passengers. That same month, the Union Government officially declared it an international airport, facilitating its first direct overseas connectivity to destinations such as Sharjah. As the primary gateway to the world’s leading diamond cutting and polishing center and a major Indian textile hub, the airport provides essential infrastructure for the city’s industrial growth. It specifically supports the Surat Diamond Bourse, the world’s largest office complex, by facilitating the movement of high-value goods and international business travelers, thereby cementing Surat’s position as a critical node in the global trade network.
