Vadodara Airport, historically referred to as Civil Airport Harni, serves the city of Vadodara in Gujarat. While there have been local initiatives to rename the facility after Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, it remains officially designated as Vadodara Airport. The site’s aviation history began in the 1930s when it was established as a private airfield for the princely state of Baroda before transitioning into a public civil aerodrome; it did not replace a prior facility but rather modernized the existing airfield. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled over 1.1 million passengers, ranking it as the 34th busiest airport in the country. A significant milestone in its development was the October 22, 2016, inauguration of the New Integrated Terminal Building, which expanded the facility's capacity to 700 passengers per hour. This terminal earned a 4-star GRIHA rating, distinguishing it as India’s second green airport due to its sustainable design and energy-efficient infrastructure. Furthermore, the airport was recognized as the cleanest in its category during the 2020 Swachhata Graded Survey. As a critical gateway to Gujarat’s cultural capital, the airport supports Vadodara’s role as a prominent industrial hub for pharmaceuticals and engineering while providing essential connectivity for tourists traveling to the Statue of Unity in nearby Kevadia.
