Kozhikode International Airport, also known as Calicut International Airport, serves the Malabar region of Kerala and is named after the historic coastal city of Kozhikode, which was officially renamed from Calicut in 1991. The facility commenced operations on April 13, 1988, establishing the first major commercial aviation link for the region rather than replacing an existing airfield. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it ranks as the ninth busiest airport in the country for international passenger traffic and the sixteenth busiest overall, handling approximately 2.97 million travelers. Key infrastructure milestones include the granting of official international status in February 2006 and the subsequent inauguration of a new international terminal in 2007. More recently, the airport completed a significant runway recarpeting project in 2023 to enhance safety on its distinctive tabletop runway.
