Kannur International Airport (CNN) is named after the historic coastal city of Kannur in Kerala, maintaining its geographical designation since its inception. It was officially inaugurated on December 9, 2018, as a greenfield project, establishing the first air link for the North Malabar region rather than replacing an existing facility. While it does not currently hold a significant global ranking, the airport handled over 1.2 million passengers during the 2023-2024 fiscal year, positioning it as the fourth busiest airport in Kerala and approximately 35th among all Indian airports by passenger volume. Key milestones include the passenger terminal building achieving a LEED Gold rating for sustainable architecture and the implementation of a large-scale solar power project intended to eventually meet the facility's total energy requirements.
