Mangalore International Airport, which derives its name from the coastal city it serves, was originally known as Bajpe Aerodrome before being formally designated as an international airport in 2012. Established on December 25, 1951, the facility served as the primary aviation gateway for the coastal region of Karnataka from its inception, rather than replacing an earlier airfield. According to 2023–24 traffic data from the Airports Authority of India, it ranks as the 31st busiest airport in the country, handling approximately 1.9 million passengers annually, though it does not currently hold a major global traffic ranking. Significant developments in its operational history include the commissioning of a second tabletop runway in 2006 to accommodate larger aircraft and the inauguration of a new integrated terminal building at Kenjar in 2010. Furthermore, the airport achieved Level 4+ Transition accreditation from the Airport Carbon Accreditation program in 2024, reflecting its commitment to carbon neutrality. As a vital link for Mangaluru, which serves as a major maritime port, educational center, and industrial hub, the airport facilitates critical connectivity for the city’s growing IT sector and its role as a gateway to prominent religious and heritage tourism sites across the Western Ghats.
