Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Airport is officially named after the renowned 20th-century Kannada poet and Jnanpith laureate, Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa. Although the Karnataka cabinet initially considered naming the facility after former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, the current name was formally adopted in 2023 after the former leader declined the honor in favor of the poet. This greenfield development was inaugurated on February 27, 2023, and began commercial flight operations on August 31, 2023, providing the region with its first dedicated air link rather than replacing an existing facility. In its initial operational phase, the airport recorded 39,040 passengers between April 2023 and March 2024, with traffic increasing significantly to 94,291 passengers during the first seven months of 2025. Notable milestones include the construction of a 3,200-meter runway, which is the second-longest in the state of Karnataka, and a passenger terminal uniquely designed in the shape of a lotus flower. The facility also prioritizes sustainability through its 1000 KWP solar power installation. Shivamogga functions as the Gateway of Malnad, serving as a critical hub for the region's agricultural trade in areca nuts and rice, an educational center, and a major tourist gateway to the Western Ghats and Jog Falls. The airport supports these sectors by enhancing accessibility for business travelers and nature enthusiasts alike, bridging the connectivity gap between central Karnataka and major domestic hubs.
