Mysore Airport, officially known as Mysuru Airport following the city's renaming in 2014 and frequently referred to as Mandakalli Airport, was originally established in 1940 by the Princely State of Mysore. The modern facility was significantly refurbished and inaugurated in May 2010 to facilitate scheduled commercial operations, replacing the older, limited airstrip that had served military and training purposes for decades. In the 2023–2024 financial year, the airport handled 127,994 passengers with services from carriers such as IndiGo and Alliance Air, positioning it as a growing regional domestic hub, though it does not currently rank among India's top fifty busiest airports. Key milestones include the 2010 opening of its current passenger terminal, which has a capacity for 200 peak-hour travellers, and the ongoing Phase I expansion project aimed at extending the concrete runway from 1,740 metres to 2,300 metres to accommodate larger aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Additionally, the airport is part of the Airports Authority of India’s sustainability initiative, receiving renewable power from a regional 8 MW solar plant to support its goal of 100% green energy usage. As the gateway to Karnataka’s cultural capital, the airport plays a vital role in supporting Mysuru’s status as a premier heritage and yoga destination while bolstering its emergence as the state’s second-largest IT and electronics manufacturing hub.
