Kanpur Airport (IATA: KNU), officially designated as the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Airport following a 2017 renaming of the former Kanpur Civil Enclave, is named in honor of the prominent Indian independence movement activist and journalist. The facility operates as a civil enclave within the Chakeri Air Force Station, which was established in the 1940s; it serves as the city's primary aviation gateway rather than a replacement for a previous airport. In terms of passenger traffic, the airport is categorized as a regional facility and currently ranks outside the top fifty busiest airports in India, handling 178,240 passengers during the 2023-2024 fiscal year, and it does not hold a global traffic ranking. A defining milestone in its development was the inauguration of a new integrated terminal building on June 7, 2023. This 6,243-square-meter facility represents a massive expansion over the original terminal, increasing peak-hour capacity to 400 passengers and adding an apron capable of accommodating three Airbus A321 aircraft simultaneously. As a major industrial hub recognized globally for its leather and textile industries, Kanpur relies on this airport to support its commercial interests and its status as a center for higher education and research, most notably as the home of the Indian Institute of Technology. The airport’s modernization is central to facilitating the movement of business professionals and academics to this key North Indian economic district.
