Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (RDP) is officially named after the renowned Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, a title conferred by the West Bengal government in 2013 to honor his cultural legacy. Originally referred to as Durgapur Airport or Andal Airport, the facility was constructed on the site of the former World War II-era RAF Station Andal and did not replace an existing commercial airport. It was inaugurated in September 2013 and commenced scheduled commercial flight operations on May 18, 2015, as India’s first private sector greenfield airport. According to 2023–24 data from the Airports Authority of India, it ranks as the 58th busiest airport in the country and the third busiest in the state of West Bengal. Key milestones include its status as the centerpiece of the nation’s first aerotropolis and the operation of a 5,750-square-meter terminal designed with an annual capacity of 1.2 million passengers. The airport serves as a vital gateway for Durgapur, a major industrial and steel-producing hub, as well as an emerging center for information technology and higher education. By providing essential air links to major Indian metropolitan areas, the airport supports the logistical requirements of the Durgapur-Asansol industrial belt, a region characterized by its extensive coal, steel, and manufacturing industries.
