Purnea Airport, officially designated as the Civil Enclave at Chunapur Air Force Station, is located in the Purnea district of Bihar and takes its name from the historic city it serves. The facility originated as a strategic military outpost established in 1962 during the Sino-Indian War to bolster regional defense and did not replace any existing civilian airfield. While it has functioned primarily as an Indian Air Force base for decades, efforts to establish a permanent commercial terminal began in earnest recently, meaning it does not currently feature in national or global passenger traffic rankings due to the absence of scheduled commercial flights. A significant milestone was reached in June 2024 when the Bihar government and the Airports Authority of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding to construct a new civil enclave on approximately 52.18 acres of land. This development follows years of administrative negotiations and runway upgrades intended to accommodate narrow-body aircraft for regional connectivity. Purnea serves as a vital commercial and educational hub for the Seemanchal region, acting as a major trading center for agricultural products such as maize and jute. The operationalization of the airport is expected to transform the city into a strategic gateway for North Bihar, facilitating better connectivity to neighboring Nepal and West Bengal while supporting the local business district and regional healthcare infrastructure.
