Darbhanga Airport (DBR), officially known by its city name, originated as a private airfield owned by the Darbhanga Raj family before being utilized by the Indian Air Force. While often associated with the Maithili poet Vidyapati, it maintains its official designation as Darbhanga Airport. Commercial operations commenced on November 8, 2020, under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, marking the first time the city had scheduled civil aviation services. In terms of passenger traffic, the airport has emerged as one of India's most successful regional facilities. For the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it handled approximately 532,442 passengers, ranking it as the third busiest airport in Bihar after Patna and Gaya. While it does not yet feature in global traffic rankings, its rapid growth reflects its importance in the North Bihar region. Significant milestones include the inauguration of its interim civil enclave terminal in 2020 and the subsequent approval for a permanent terminal building. In March 2024, the foundation stone was laid for a new terminal facility designed to handle 2.5 million passengers annually, representing a major capacity expansion from the initial pre-fabricated structure. As the cultural heart of the Mithila region, Darbhanga serves as a vital hub for trade, healthcare, and education. The airport supports this role by providing direct connectivity for the region's agricultural exports, such as Makhana, and facilitating tourism related to the area's rich heritage and Madhubani art traditions.
