Officially known as Deoghar Airport, the facility takes its name from the host city, which translates to the Abode of the Gods, and is frequently associated with the historic Baba Baidyanath Temple. The airport was inaugurated on July 12, 2022, marking the commencement of the first scheduled commercial flight operations in the Santhal Pargana region; it did not replace an existing commercial airport but was developed on the site of a former airstrip to serve as a greenfield project. In the 2023–2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 645,437 passengers, ranking it as the second busiest airport in the state of Jharkhand. Although it does not yet appear in global traffic rankings, its rapid growth underscores its importance in India’s regional aviation expansion. Key milestones include the commissioning of its 4,000-square-meter terminal building, designed to accommodate 200 passengers during peak hours, and the implementation of night landing facilities in February 2024, which significantly increased its operational capacity. Deoghar functions primarily as a major religious and heritage destination, serving as a focal point for millions of pilgrims during the annual Shravani Mela. The airport supports this role by providing direct access for domestic travelers, effectively transforming the city into a modern transit hub that bolsters the local tourism and hospitality sectors.
