Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is officially known by its location name and operates as a civil enclave within the Bagdogra Air Force Station. Unlike many major Indian aviation hubs, the facility has not undergone a formal renaming and continues to be identified by its geographic locality. Civil flight operations began in the early 1960s, utilizing the infrastructure of the existing military airbase to provide the first commercial air link to North Bengal. For the 2023-2024 fiscal year, Bagdogra ranked as the 18th busiest airport in India by passenger volume, handling approximately 2.3 million travelers, though it remains outside the world’s top-ranked global airports. Significant milestones include the attainment of international status in 2002 and the 2014 implementation of night landing facilities, which allowed for increased flight frequency. In March 2024, a major expansion project was initiated with the foundation stone laying for a new terminal designed to accommodate 10 million passengers annually. The airport serves as the essential gateway to the Eastern Himalayas, including the tourist destinations of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, as well as the state of Sikkim. It supports Siliguri’s status as a critical commercial, tea-trading, and transport hub, facilitating both regional business and international tourism to neighboring Bhutan and Nepal.
