The facility operates as a civil enclave within the Gorakhpur Air Force Station, which has served as a military base for decades; modern commercial operations were significantly formalized with the inauguration of a dedicated passenger terminal in June 2017. It did not replace a prior airport but expanded the existing military infrastructure for public use. During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport recorded a passenger footprint of approximately 715,303 travelers, establishing it as a key regional player in Uttar Pradesh, though it does not feature in global traffic rankings. Notable milestones include the 2017 terminal opening and the 2021 initiation of an expansion project designed to increase the terminal area to nearly 3,500 square meters to accommodate rising demand. As a primary gateway to the Buddhist Circuit, the airport supports Gorakhpur’s role as a major religious and heritage destination, particularly for visitors to the Gorakhnath Math and pilgrims transiting to Lumbini, Nepal.
