Dehradun Airport, officially known as Jolly Grant Airport, serves as the primary aviation gateway to the state of Uttarakhand. While the state government moved to rename the facility Atal Bihari Vajpayee Airport in 2018 to honor the late Prime Minister, it remains widely recognized by its original geographic designation. The airport commenced commercial operations in 1982 and did not replace an existing facility, instead establishing the first major air link for the Doon Valley. According to Airports Authority of India statistics for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 1.64 million passengers, ranking it as the 38th busiest airport in the country. Significant infrastructure milestones include a 2008 runway extension that enabled the operation of larger narrow-body aircraft and the recent completion of a new integrated terminal building. This terminal expansion, inaugurated in two phases between October 2021 and February 2024, increased the airport's capacity to 3.25 million passengers annually. Dehradun serves as a critical hub for the region's educational institutions, administrative functions, and the burgeoning tourism sector. The airport facilitates access to the Garhwal Himalayas and major spiritual destinations such as Rishikesh and Haridwar, effectively supporting Uttarakhand’s status as a premier center for pilgrimage and wellness tourism.
