Named after the historic city it serves, Madurai International Airport (IXM) stands as a vital gateway to southern India. Established in 1957, the facility was built to provide air connectivity to the region and did not replace an existing airfield. While there have been persistent local proposals to rename the airport after leader Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Thevar, it officially retains its original name. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport ranks as the 33rd busiest in the country, handling over 1.3 million passengers annually. Significant milestones in its development include the inauguration of a modern integrated terminal building in September 2010 and its official designation as a customs airport in 2012, which facilitated the commencement of international flights to destinations like Colombo and Dubai. In line with sustainability goals, the airport has implemented a 720 kWp solar power plant to reduce its carbon footprint. Madurai serves as a critical cultural and religious hub, famous for the Meenakshi Amman Temple, as well as an emerging center for IT and textile industries. The airport supports this multifaceted role by providing essential logistics and tourism infrastructure, connecting the southern districts of Tamil Nadu to major domestic metros and international transit points.
