Tuticorin Airport, officially known by its original name since its inception, serves the coastal district of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. While local government proposals have frequently suggested renaming the facility after the Indian freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaranar, it currently continues to operate under its primary geographical designation. The airport was inaugurated on April 30, 1992, established as a new civil aviation facility to bolster connectivity in southern Tamil Nadu rather than as a replacement for an existing airfield. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport recorded 181,304 passengers, ranking it 82nd among India’s domestic and international airports by total traffic; it does not feature in global traffic rankings. Key infrastructure milestones include the ongoing expansion of the runway from 1,350 meters to 3,115 meters to accommodate larger narrow-body aircraft and the construction of a new passenger terminal designed to manage 600 peak-hour travelers. Furthermore, the recent operationalization of night landing facilities and a new Air Traffic Control tower has significantly upgraded its technical capacity. As a critical infrastructure link for the Pearl City, the airport supports Tuticorin’s role as a major maritime port and industrial hub, facilitating essential travel for the salt, chemical, and thermal power industries while acting as a gateway for pilgrims visiting the Tiruchendur Murugan Temple and the southern coastline.
