Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Trivandrum

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) is named after the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, which translates to the City of Lord Anantha. Established in 1932 as the Trivandrum Aerodrome to serve the Royal Flying Club, it was the first airport in the state and did not replace any previous facility. The airport was formally designated as India’s first non-metro international airport in 1991, the same year the city officially reverted to its traditional name. During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the facility handled approximately 4.4 million passengers, ranking it as the 21st busiest airport in India. A significant infrastructure milestone occurred in 2011 with the inauguration of the international Terminal 2, a glass-and-granite structure designed to handle increased transborder traffic. In October 2021, the airport’s management was transferred to the Adani Group, marking a transition toward private-sector modernization. The airport has also achieved Level 3+ Carbon Neutrality status from the Airports Council International, highlighting its commitment to sustainable operations. As a critical regional hub, the airport supports Thiruvananthapuram’s role as a major information technology center—anchored by Technopark—and a strategic base for aerospace research. It serves as the primary gateway for international travelers visiting the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and the coastal resorts of Kovalam, effectively supporting the city’s dual identity as a heritage destination and a modern industrial and administrative capital.
