Puducherry Airport, known as PNY, is the primary aviation facility serving the Union Territory of Puducherry. It is named after its host city and was formerly known as Pondicherry Airport until the territory was officially renamed in 2006. The airport originally opened in 1989 as a regional airstrip and did not replace an earlier facility. In terms of passenger traffic, it remains a minor regional hub; for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it handled approximately 86,000 passengers, placing it among the country’s smaller regional facilities without a global ranking. A major milestone in its development was the inauguration of a new passenger terminal on January 17, 2013, which expanded its capacity to handle 300 passengers during peak hours. Additionally, in 2020, the airport commissioned a 500-kilowatt ground-mounted solar power plant to advance its sustainability goals. Puducherry serves as a significant cultural and heritage tourism gateway, renowned for its French colonial architecture and spiritual centers like the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville. The airport supports this role by providing direct regional links to major IT and business hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad, primarily through turboprop services operated by carriers such as IndiGo, thereby reducing travel time for visitors who would otherwise rely on the long road journey from Chennai.
