Shillong Airport, officially known as Umroi Airport after its location and historically referred to as Barapani Airport, is the primary aviation facility serving the state of Meghalaya. The airport was constructed in the mid-1960s and became operational in the mid-1970s to provide direct air connectivity to the state capital. While it does not rank among India’s top fifty busiest airports by passenger volume, handling 119,982 passengers during the 2024-25 fiscal year, it serves as a critical regional hub under the UDAN scheme. Key infrastructure milestones include the inauguration of a new passenger terminal in June 2011 and the 2015 installation of an Instrument Landing System to assist with landings during the region’s frequent low-visibility conditions. In June 2019, the airport achieved a Category 3C license, permitting the operation of larger turboprop aircraft such as the ATR 72 and Bombardier Q400. A major expansion project is currently underway, following environmental clearance in March 2024, to extend the runway to approximately 2,500 meters to accommodate narrow-body jets. As the Scotland of the East, Shillong is a vital hub for tourism, education, and administration. The airport supports these roles by providing a direct gateway to Meghalaya’s iconic landscapes, including Cherrapunji and the living root bridges, significantly reducing the travel time previously required via road from Guwahati.
