Silchar Airport, historically known as Kumbhirgram Airport, is named after the locality in which it is situated within the Cachar district of Assam. The airfield was established in 1944 by the British as a Royal Air Force base during World War II and transitioned to commercial use after the conflict, rather than replacing an existing facility. Based on Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-24 fiscal year, it is the fourth busiest airport in Northeast India, though it remains outside of major global rankings. Significant milestones include the 2005 inauguration of a modern passenger terminal capable of handling 300 travelers during peak hours and the installation of an Instrument Landing System to mitigate weather-related disruptions. Recently, the government initiated plans for a new greenfield civil enclave at the nearby Dolu Tea Estate to significantly expand long-term capacity. As the primary gateway to the Barak Valley, Silchar serves as a vital commercial and educational hub for southern Assam and the neighboring states of Mizoram and Manipur. The airport supports the region’s extensive tea and agricultural industries while providing essential connectivity for the National Institute of Technology, Silchar, and various healthcare facilities serving the tri-state border area.
