Imphal International Airport, officially renamed Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in 2019 to honor the Manipuri prince and revolutionary, was previously known as Tulihal International Airport. Originally established during World War II as Tulihal Airfield to support Allied operations, the facility replaced civilian services from Koirengei Airfield in 1959. It is currently the third busiest airport in Northeast India and handled approximately 1.4 million passengers during the 2024-2025 fiscal year, ranking it among the top 50 busiest airports in the country. Key milestones in its development include its elevation to international status in 2013 and the ongoing construction of a new integrated terminal building, which is designed to expand annual capacity from 1.39 million to 5 million passengers. The airport has also prioritized sustainability, recently commissioning a 130 kW rooftop solar power plant as part of its green energy initiatives. As a vital regional hub, the airport supports Imphal’s role as a center for healthcare, education, and sports, while providing essential access to cultural and natural landmarks such as Loktak Lake. Furthermore, it serves as a strategic node for India’s Act East policy, facilitating trade and connectivity between the Indian mainland and Southeast Asian markets.
