Lengpui Airport, commonly referred to as Aizawl Airport, derives its name from the town of Lengpui where it is located and holds the distinction of being the first large-scale airport in India to be constructed by a state government. The facility officially commenced operations in December 1998, replacing the smaller and less accessible Turial airstrip as the primary aviation link for the region. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled 416,211 passengers, ranking it as the 62nd busiest airport in the country, though it does not hold a significant global traffic ranking. Key milestones in its development include the 2020 inauguration of a 1 megawatt-peak solar power plant, which has transitioned the facility toward greater environmental sustainability, and the critical installation of an Instrument Landing System to navigate the complex topography and weather conditions of the Mizo Hills. As the central gateway to Aizawl, the airport is vital to the city’s role as an administrative and cultural hub. It supports Mizoram’s burgeoning eco-tourism industry and facilitates essential connectivity for a state that serves as a strategic point for cross-border trade and regional security in Northeast India.
