Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, identified by the IATA code IXA, serves as the primary aviation gateway to the state of Tripura. Originally established in 1942 as Agartala Airport, it was renamed in July 2018 to honor the last ruling king of the princely state of Tripura, Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur, who is credited with the airport's initial construction. The facility began as a technical base for the Royal Air Force during World War II and has since evolved into the second busiest airport in Northeast India, trailing only Guwahati. According to 2023-24 data from the Airports Authority of India, the airport handled approximately 1.5 million passengers, placing it among the top thirty busiest airports in the country. A significant milestone in its development was the January 2022 inauguration of a new integrated terminal building, which expanded the airport's annual capacity to three million passengers. This modern facility incorporates sustainable design elements, including a 2-megawatt solar power plant and architectural motifs inspired by local bamboo handicrafts.
