Visakhapatnam International Airport, commonly known as Vizag Airport, operates as a civil enclave on the Indian Navy airbase INS Dega. Unlike many major Indian airports, it has not been renamed after a specific historical figure and retains its geographical designation. Civil flight operations at the site began in 1981 with a single daily flight, and the facility did not replace an existing airport but rather expanded the utility of the established military airfield. In the 2023–2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 2.73 million passengers, ranking it as the 22nd busiest airport in India. It does not currently feature in the top 100 global airport rankings by traffic. Significant infrastructure upgrades include the inauguration of a new integrated terminal building on February 20, 2009, which significantly increased passenger capacity. The airport also extended its runway to 10,000 feet in 2007 to accommodate wide-body aircraft and achieved a sustainability milestone in 2016 with the commissioning of a 2-megawatt solar power plant to reduce its carbon footprint. As the largest city in Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam serves as a critical industrial and port hub, housing the Eastern Naval Command and a burgeoning information technology sector. The airport facilitates this growth by providing essential connectivity for business travelers and tourists visiting the Eastern Ghats and the Araku Valley, bridging the city’s maritime economy with global markets.
