Diu Airport, named after the island it serves, was established in 1954 during the period of Portuguese administration. Originally serving as a naval airbase for the Portuguese Air Force, the facility did not replace an earlier airport and remains the only commercial aviation hub in the union territory. According to official data for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, the airport handled 104,218 passengers, representing a 57.3% year-on-year increase, though it is not currently ranked among India’s top fifty busiest airports. A defining historical milestone occurred in December 1961 when the airfield was bombed by the Indian Air Force during the liberation of Diu, leading to its eventual transition to the Airports Authority of India for civilian use. Modern developments include its integration into the UDAN regional connectivity scheme and a 2025 initiative to install a 30.52 kW rooftop solar power system to enhance sustainability. As a vital tourist gateway, the airport supports Diu’s role as a heritage and leisure destination, providing essential access to its 16th-century Portuguese architecture, the Diu Fort, and coastal attractions like Nagoa Beach.
