Jammu Airport, also known as Satwari Airport due to its location in Raipur Satwari, is officially named after the city it serves. While there have been long-standing local proposals to rename the facility after Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, it remains officially designated as Jammu Airport. The facility has functioned as a primary regional gateway since civil operations commenced in 1950, operating as a domestic civil enclave within an air force base without replacing a prior airport. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled 1,400,970 passengers, ranking it as the 31st busiest airport in India; it does not currently hold a notable global traffic ranking. Significant milestones include the 2017 inauguration of an expanded terminal building, which increased peak hour handling capacity to 720 passengers. In 2021, the airport completed a critical runway extension from 6,700 feet to 8,000 feet, allowing for the operation of larger aircraft and improved safety margins. Furthermore, the foundation stone for a new terminal building was laid in 2023 to accommodate rising demand. As the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu serves as a vital religious and heritage hub, acting as the primary gateway for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine. The airport supports this role by providing essential connectivity for tourists and business travelers, bridging the region with major Indian metropolitan centers.
