Srinagar International Airport, officially designated as Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, is named in honor of the revered 14th-century Kashmiri Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali. Originally established as a military landing strip for the Indian Air Force in 1947, the facility transitioned into a civil enclave to serve the Kashmir Valley. It was formally granted international status by the Union Cabinet in 2005. While the site has been operational for decades, the current integrated terminal was inaugurated in February 2009 to accommodate growing civilian demand. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 4.4 million passengers, ranking it as the 26th busiest airport in India by total passenger traffic. Significant milestones in its development include the commencement of night flight operations in August 2021, which drastically improved regional connectivity, and the 2022 approval of a major expansion project designed to increase terminal capacity from 950 to 3,000 peak-hour passengers. Additionally, the airport has implemented green initiatives, such as the installation of a 500 kWp rooftop solar power plant to reduce its carbon footprint. As the primary gateway to Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the airport serves as a critical hub for the region’s massive tourism industry and its heritage-based economy. It facilitates the movement of visitors to iconic sites like Dal Lake and provides essential logistics for the export of local handicrafts and horticultural products, such as saffron and apples, thereby underpinning the economic stability of the Himalayan territory.
