Officially known as Maharana Pratap Airport, the facility is named after the 16th-century ruler of the Mewar kingdom. It was formerly known as Dabok Airport before being renamed in 2005 to honor the historical figure. While the airfield has served the region for decades, the modern era of the airport began with the inauguration of its current passenger terminal in February 2008, replacing the original, smaller infrastructure at the same location. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 1.35 million passengers, ranking it as the 43rd busiest airport in India. It does not currently hold a significant global ranking due to its primarily domestic focus. Key milestones include the 2008 terminal expansion and the installation of a rooftop solar power plant to improve energy efficiency. In March 2024, the government initiated a major expansion project for a new terminal building to significantly increase passenger capacity. Udaipur serves as a premier global heritage and luxury tourism destination, often called the City of Lakes. The airport functions as the vital gateway for this hospitality-driven economy, facilitating the arrival of high-end travelers and supporting the city's status as a major hub for destination weddings and international conferences in Rajasthan.
