King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is the country’s largest and busiest airport, serving as the main entry point for millions of travelers to Mecca and Medina. Opened in 1981 and named after the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, the airport is a strategic hub for both religious pilgrimage and commercial aviation. Spanning over 105 square kilometers, KAIA features one of the world’s largest terminals—the Hajj Terminal—designed to accommodate the surge in passengers during pilgrimage seasons.
In 2023, the airport processed approximately 41 million passengers, making it a central hub for Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) and a key component in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative. Its location on the Red Sea positions it as a vital link between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Ongoing expansions and modernization projects continue to enhance capacity and service quality, solidifying KAIA’s status as a world-class international gateway.
KAIA is a major hub connecting Saudi Arabia to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The airport’s route network is shaped by both business travel and religious tourism, especially during Hajj and Umrah seasons.
The busiest international routes include London Heathrow, Dubai International, Cairo, and Karachi. During Hajj and Umrah, special charter flights operate from over 100 countries, significantly increasing capacity from Muslim-majority nations.
KAIA operates four terminals, each serving specific passenger groups and flight types. Inter-terminal transfers are facilitated by shuttle buses every 10–15 minutes, and covered walkways connect the North and South Terminals.
Terminal 1, opened in 2019, features advanced technology and enhanced passenger experience. Shuttle buses and walkways provide convenient inter-terminal access.
KAIA offers multiple check-in and security options to streamline passenger flow and maintain international safety standards.
Arrive at least 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic flights. During peak seasons, allow extra time. Expedited lanes are available for premium passengers and frequent flyers.
KAIA provides a comprehensive range of facilities for all travelers, including business, leisure, and religious passengers.
Licensed taxis are available outside each terminal with metered fares. Typical fares to central Jeddah are 80–120 SAR. Uber and Careem operate from dedicated pickup zones, offering standard and premium vehicles.
SAPTCO provides regular shuttle buses to major hotels and districts. Fares range from 20–40 SAR. Many hotels offer complimentary shuttles (advance booking recommended).
SAPTCO public buses (e.g., Route 501) connect the airport to central Jeddah and King Abdulaziz University. Fares are 4–8 SAR. The Jeddah Metro is under construction, with airport service expected by 2030.
International driving licenses are accepted for tourists; residents require a Saudi license. Rental rates start from approximately 120–180 SAR per day for economy vehicles.
KAIA offers over 11,000 parking spaces across short-term, long-term, economy, and premium valet zones. Online pre-booking is available for discounts and guaranteed spaces.
Covered parking is available in multi-level structures. Payment options include cash, credit cards, and mobile apps. EV charging stations are in premium areas, with expansion planned. Accessible parking is located near terminal entrances.
Interactive airport maps are available on the official KAIA website and mobile app, providing real-time navigation, gate locations, and amenities. Digital kiosks and information desks are located throughout all terminals for on-site assistance. Signage is in Arabic and English, with clear wayfinding to transfer shuttles, baggage claim, and transportation zones.
Customer service is available 24/7 in Arabic and English. Real-time updates and inquiries are also available via Twitter (@JedAirport) and Instagram. Emergency numbers are displayed throughout the airport and accessible via the KAIA mobile app.
