Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is located at an altitude of 10,682 feet (3,256 meters), making it one of the highest commercial airports in the world. Named after the 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, the airport is the main air gateway to Ladakh and is vital for tourism, military logistics, and regional connectivity. The airport operates primarily from April to November, with daylight-only operations due to challenging weather and terrain. Its single terminal is designed to accommodate the unique climatic conditions of Ladakh.
The airport is essential for connecting Ladakh to major Indian cities, supporting both civilian and military needs. Its proximity to the Line of Actual Control and the region’s increasing tourism have made it strategically significant.
Leh Airport operates domestic flights only, linking Ladakh to key Indian cities. There are no international flights at present.
The Delhi-Leh route is the busiest, accounting for the majority of passenger traffic. Flight schedules are subject to weather and may experience delays or cancellations due to high-altitude conditions.
Leh Airport features a single integrated terminal for all domestic arrivals and departures. The terminal was expanded in 2018 to enhance capacity and passenger comfort.
Passengers should arrive at the airport well in advance due to enhanced security and operational protocols.
A medical station with oxygen is available for altitude-related issues. Passengers with health concerns should seek assistance immediately upon arrival.
Pre-paid taxis are the main transport mode to Leh city (5 km away). Fixed fares to the city center range from ₹400–500 per vehicle. Shared taxis are available for budget travelers. Ride-sharing apps are not operational in Leh; local taxi unions manage services. Typical journey time is 15–20 minutes.
Many hotels and guesthouses offer advance-arranged airport pickups for guests. Confirm with your accommodation prior to arrival.
Public bus services are limited and schedules are irregular. Not recommended for travelers with time-sensitive connections.
Tourist vehicle parking is limited due to security. Most travelers use taxis or hotel transfers for airport access.
The airport’s compact layout ensures easy navigation. Signage is available in Hindi, English, and Ladakhi. Digital displays provide flight and gate information. Terminal maps are posted at key points, and information desks are staffed during operational hours for assistance.
