Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2021: Railways to Run New Special Trains, Undertake Several Measures for Devotees

The Kumbh Mela, celebrated four times over a span of 12 years, is an important Hindu religious festival. The location of the festival keeps changing between four pilgrimage sites situated on the banks of holy rivers. 

These places are namely Haridwar (on the Ganges river), Ujjain (on the Shipra river), Nashik (on the Godavari river) and Prayagraj (at the confluence of Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers).

The next Kumbh Mela will begin from Makar Sankranti i.e. 14th January, 2021 and go on till 27th April, 2021. It will be held in four districts of Uttarakhand, namely Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal and Pauri Garhwal.

Development of the brand new Yog Nagri Rishikesh Railway Station

The new Yog Nagri Rishikesh railway station is being built by the Railways at a cost of about 220 crores. Three new platforms have been built at the station and the construction work is expected to be completed on time for the Mela.

As many as 35 special trains will be run

The Northern Railway will run as many as 35 new trains, along with 25 regular trains so as to provide devotees with a safe and reliable mode of commute to the Kumbh Mela. The zone will also increase the trains as per passenger demand. The details for these trains will soon be announced.


Several measures being undertaken at key stations for the Mela

The national transporter has also developed new foot overbridges at the Haridwar, Rishikesh, Motichur, Ethal, Pathri and Jwalapur railway stations. Along with this, these stations have also been provided with additional platform surfaces, shelters, water booths as well as circulating areas.

The stations are also being equipped with 83 unreserved, 21 reserved and 16 inquiry counters. The Railways has also installed 340 CCTV cameras at around 10 stations along with the Train Information System.

The Railways Minister also announced 24 new trains to facilitate safe and comfortable travel for the general public. These trains will run to major pilgrimage destinations including Mathura, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Prayagraj, thereby bringing huge relief to devotees:
