I stayed at Kashi Mantra, Varanasi last week with my family. Overall, the hotel was clean, well-maintained, and conveniently located near the temple. The staff was courteous, and the facilities were satisfactory. I had no major complaints regarding the hotel’s cleanliness, service, or location.However, I was disappointed by the way the room pricing was presented on Agoda. I booked a room for around 1,500 based on the listing, which showed an attractive room with all basic amenities. Before arriving, I even called the hotel to confirm the distance from the temple, and everything seemed fine.The problem arose when I checked in. After showing me the room, the hotel informed me that the booked room did not have air conditioning and only had a fan. They then offered an AC room for an additional 1,000, bringing the total cost to around 2,500.As a family travelling with a 5-year-old child in the peak summer heat, I had little choice but to accept the upgrade. Since the booking was non-refundable and I had already paid, finding another hotel at that moment was not practical.What bothered me was that the low-priced room appears to be used as a way to attract bookings, while most guests are likely forced to upgrade upon arrival because staying without AC in Varanasi’s summer weather is extremely uncomfortable. Although the information may technically be mentioned in the listing, it is not prominent enough and can easily be overlooked.The hotel itself is good, but I believe the room listings should be more transparent so guests clearly understand what they are booking and do not face unexpected costs at check-in.
